Rams and CHARACTERplus Name 2013 Character Fitness Model Schools

The St. Louis Rams and CHARACTERplus, an initiative of the Cooperating School Districts, today announced this year’s Character Fitness Model Schools. Ladue Middle School in the Ladue School District, Point Elementary School in the Mehlville School District and Woerther Elementary School in the Rockwood School District were selected as the 2013 Character Fitness Model Schools.

The Model Schools program recognizes schools that have effectively implemented character fitness throughout the school year in a way that engages students, staff and the school community as a whole. Character fitness combines health and nutrition efforts, character development and physical exercise. Schools that have achieved a mastery rating in those categories, as determined by a panel of judges, are recognized with the honor of being named a Model School.

Ladue, Point and Woerther were selected as Model Schools based on the number and quality of initiatives in which they participated this year, and how the programs collectively involved the student body. In addition, the schools were judged on staff involvement in teaching and modeling character fitness, curricular connections within physical education, health and core classes, community outreach and service, and the outcomes of the various programs and efforts.

This year’s Model Schools have also embraced a culture of character fitness by participating in national and regional initiatives that improve their physical activity and service. Such programs include the President’s Fitness Challenge, PLAY 60, GO! St. Louis Read, Right & Run Marathon, Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart, National Walk/Bike to School, in addition to others. They encourage individual goal setting and help students track improvement through Fitness Gram and heart rate monitors.

Teachers from core and encore curricular areas regularly incorporate five-minute activity breaks for their students in class and before tests. They also attend yoga or fitness classes after school and organize walks in support of worthy causes.

Examples of efforts from Point include a two-week dance unit created by the music teacher to help fund diabetes awareness. Parents also got involved by organizing a Father-Daughter Dance and a Mother-Son bowling event.

In science classes at Ladue, students study heart rates in the lab, calculate acceleration rates on rollerblades, test water samples from a local creek and explore physics with a cardboard boat regatta. In communication arts, students research sugar effects, analyze food labels and put grammar rules to movement with Conjunction Junction. The parents of Ladue students also helped establish a “Girls on the Run” program at the school.

Woerther students take part in “Bowling for Bucks, ” a program in which they practice bowling, shagging pins, counting money and scorekeeping. And second-graders test their geography skills in the united states Relays.

All three Model Schools will receive a banner to highlight their accomplishment during an on-site celebration. Each school will also receive tickets to a 2013 Rams game and an invitation to co-present at the Fall 2013 launch of Character Fitness. In addition, their ideas will be shared with all educators through the St. Louis Rams and CHARACTERplus websites.

The St. Louis Rams and CHARACTERplus partnered to create the character Fitness Model Schools program in 2010, recognizing the connection between the principles of character education and fitness. The program offers the opportunity to benefit students and schools alike in a joint effort to create foundations for a healthy life.

CHARACTERplus is a community partner of the St. Louis Rams, helping the organization to instill character and healthy lifestyle choices in youth. CHARACTERplus currently involves more than 74 member school districts in Missouri and southern Illinois, including 30, 000 teachers serving in public, private and charter schools who reach more than 340, 000 students.

Rams Honor Military Members Past and Present

In honor of Veterans Day and the approaching holiday season, the St. Louis Rams combined the best of both worlds. On Tuesday, the Rams teamed with our countrys past heroes to share some holiday spirit with the heroes currently serving.

As part of their monthly Staff Days of Service program, members of the Rams organization visited with former military men and women currently residing in the Missouri Veterans Home St. Louis. The Missouri Veterans Home St. Louis is the largest of seven long-term care homes dedicated to military veterans in the state. Among the 298 men and women living in the home, every branch of the military is represented, as is every war since World War II.

The purpose of the afternoon was two-fold. The first part was to honor and interact with veterans. The second was to spread holiday cheer to the men and women currently serving overseas. The two goals were brought together with one campaign: Holiday Mail for Heroes, a program started by the American Red Cross to bring some holiday spirit from home to soldiers abroad.

We are just delighted to be partnering with the Rams for the Holiday Mail for Heroes, American Red Cross regional chief executive officer Cindy Erickson said. The American public is so appreciative of our military, this program is our way of saying thank you during the holiday season.

It was a program that allowed the Rams and the veterans living in the home to work for a common goal.

The Rams initiated contact with the notion of this joint-venture civic partnership, and we were as excited as could be about being a host site for the project, Stan Smith, administrator with Missouri Veteran Home St. Louis said. There are few things our veterans here love more than honoring and providing respect for the active duty military who currently serve overseas. Many of them have been in that position themselves.

Throughout the afternoon, members of the Rams staff went around to various tables and worked with the veterans to personalize the cards. Helping to boost the efforts were tight ends Lance Kendricks and Matthew Mulligan, safety Craig Dahl, running back Chase Reynolds and long snapper Jake McQuaide. Rams Cheerleaders Michelle and Aimee also spent time visiting with veterans and even Rampage managed to get in on the fun.

Many of the veterans came decked out in their blue and gold gear in preparation of the event. Rams hats, shirts and even adorned helmets could be seen throughout the room. Needless to say, the players were a big draw for the event.

Its very special for our veterans to be able to have the St. Louis Rams coming out to spend the afternoon with them, Erickson said.

Another player on the Rams roster has also made a valuable contribution to the campaign. Defensive end Chris Long volunteered to serve as the Rams honorary chair for the Red Cross, and was featured on the holiday card in a camouflage jersey. Chris will also be in attendance during the upcoming annual Red Cross Blood Drive encouraging Rams fans to take some time to personalize a card for those overseas. His involvement in the program has helped bring additional awareness to the sacrifices made by military men and women.

Were thrilled that Chris is our honorary chair this year, Erickson said. It was really kind of him to do that and I think it also speaks volumes as far as his interest in also honoring the military.

According to Erickson, the goal this year is to send 25,000 cards from the St. Louis area. She also said that through the Red Cross national initiative, over 1.5 million holiday cards will be sent to soldiers across the globe.

Just to be able to get something from home, a stranger who you dont even know saying thank you, its priceless, she said.

The Rams plan to be major players in the campaign. Over 1,000 cards were personalized on Tuesday and more are sure to follow. On Saturday, November 17, the Red Cross will have another card signing at the Galleria. The Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign will continue on Sunday as well when the Rams host the New York Jets. During the game, fans can visit signing stations in sections 110, 138, 326, 353, 414 and 440, as well as the Bud Light Party Zone. Fans will also have an opportunity to personalize cards during the Rams annual Red Cross Blood Drive on November 27 at The Heights in Richmond Heights, MO. For fans interested in making cards at home, please refer to the Red Cross website at www.redcross.org/support/get-involved/holiday-mail-for-heroes for information on guidelines and drop off sites.

Rams Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Local Youth

Not really the rain triggered through the storm clouds could dampen the atmosphere in the Fairmont City Library Center. On Tuesday, four people from the St. Louis Rams assisted celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by joining several kids to have an mid-day of PLAY 60 activities and Latin dance performances.

The Rams understand Fairmont City, and particularly the Library Center. In June, they built the community s first playground right outdoors from the building. Because of its significant Hispanic influence ?§C nearly 66 percent of people is Hispanic ?§C Fairmont City seemed to be an ideal spot to recognition the culture. Attending were linebacker Rocky McIntosh, cornerback Quinton Pointer, running back Isaiah Pead and wide receiver Nick Manley.

As the gamers may have been there to guide kids through various activities, they'd not a problem sitting back and becoming instruction that belongs to them.

Following the program started having a stretching session brought through the Rams, students in the Kreitner dance troupe placed on a performance for that relaxation from the audience. Based on their instructor, these kids volunteer their lunch recess to be able to learn salsa dancing. Following the kids went ?§C or even better, danced through their routine, it had been the players  turn to use their dancing footwear.

The gamers were great,  children s librarian Alison Donnelly stated. ???It s one factor to discuss serving your area, however these men really get it done. And That I loved how they weren't scared of searching silly within the title of fun.

The special interaction wasn't lost on Donnelly.

???To begin to see the kids laughing and also the gamers joining in (around the dancing) was special,  she stated. ???Most of those kids haven't even had the chance to visit a Rams game, however they admire the gamers a lot, also it was great to determine the gamers taking pleasure in dealing with them.

After that, the children broke into three groups to get familiar with a rotation of drills and games. In the first station, kids have a dose of football training. They leaped over small hurdles and handled an exercise dummy before capping the drill by catching  leaves McIntosh and Pointer.

Pead required charge at station two, organizing relay races. The children transported a football in one finish to another, inside a shuttle run-style sprint.

In the final station, the kids switched from football abilities to futbol abilities. Preserving the theme of Hispanic culture, Manley headed the aim-shooting station. With Rams mascot Rampage in goal, the children required turns arranging for kicks. The very first couple of models visited the participants because they appeared to attain goal after goal. But Rampage settled in and demonstrated capable between your cones.

???The community continues to be abuzz readily, and will also be for any very long time,  Donnelly stated. ???In a place in which the socio-economic statistics speak on their own, occasions such as this are really inspiring plus they give kids grounds to think by themselves and shoot for their very own excellence.

Just like the final fans and families spread in the event, the heavy storm clouds folded in and also the skies opened up up. However for individuals who managed to get to the Fairmont City Library Center using the Rams, your day would be a vibrant one.

Harbaugh thinks fortunate, but RGIII was on his radar too

Andrew Luck and Jim Harbaugh, in their Stanford days. (AP)

Indiana -- Bay Area 49ers mind coach Jim Harbaugh knows an excellent quarterback as he sees one. Why? Begin with the truth that Harbaugh was an excellent signal-caller themself -- he performed within the National football league from 1987 through 2000, designed a Professional Bowl, led his Chicago Bears and Indiana Colts teams to playoff games, and it has his title in Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium within the Colts' Ring of Recognition. Like a player, he's possibly best referred to as guy Peyton Manning changed.

In the newbie as San Francisco's mind coach, Harbaugh reduced Alex Smith's negative performance habits and hang Cruz on the path for any very unpredicted visit to the NFC championship game. Obviously, Harbaugh is better-noted for the job he did with Andrew Luck at Stanford, but because he told the media on Thursday, also, he had his eye on Robert Griffin III in his prospecting days.

"I understand a great deal about Robert because we employed Robert from senior high school,Inch he stated. "Robert would be a 4. student, great parents, develops from a great home. He's had positive results at Baylor. You realize, past performance usually signifies future success, and he's had only past success. Which means you would predict great accomplishments later on."

Obviously, RGIII did not choose Stanford, likely to Baylor rather. "I can not wait to locate these men and discover why they did not arrived at Stanford," Harbaugh stated amusingly. "Confront Them!

"I had been really keen on Robert with the prospecting process, and that he made that call. I believe you've had an opportunity to become familiar with Robert to date and understand him a little. He makes good choices. He makes awesome choices. He's very careful in exactly what he is doing, and that i respected his decision and wanted him well."

When requested about his most well-known student, Harbaugh involved as effusive because he may be.

"You performed spades? Trump games? He's holding lots of bullets in many suits," Harbaugh stated of Luck. "She has all of the characteristics, really, psychologically, physically. He's as prepared as anybody that you are likely to find. He's great. What about that certain? She has lots of talent.

"I understand you are searching for summary sentences but ?- several things. What particularly? ?- All great. Like I stated, he's among the finest football gamers I have have you been around. Is the fact that adequate? And a much better person. Among the top-5 men I have existed. So he's only a pleasure to teach. Not likely to like playing against him. Not searching toward that."

Harbaugh seemed to be requested about being changed by Manning, the very first overall pick within the 1998 National football league draft.

"If you are destined to be changed by someone, that's an excellent someone to be changed by, is not it? I type of try taking some pride for the reason that. I believe that's the precise right word ?a amazing. That the career could be something which people discuss and remark about. As well as in a brief history of the overall game, you are speaking in regards to a quarterback whose career is going to be spoken about for 50, 100 a long time. He's been that type of player within the Nfl. Very amazing. Good word."

So that as lengthy because he had been so tolerant of quarterbacks, Harbaugh required the occasion to once more let everyone realize that yes, Alex Cruz is his guy entering the 2012 season.

"Yeah, Alex is our guy. That's well-recorded. He'd a significant season. Certainly like a coach, you are worried about several things. So when the quarterback's not signed and it is a totally free agent, leading with a lost sleep. But I am excited to become back at the office, very excited to become here and find out what type of improvement we are able to make from Year 1 to Year 2, and that i hope all of our men have the identical way."

Losing the NFC championship game towards the eventual Super Bowl champion New You are able to Titans would be a blow, but nothing might take from the amazing job Harbaugh did in the first season using the formerly directionless 49ers. That he's already back at the office and considering what his team can perform better isn't any surprise. Harbaugh isn't any-extras and all sorts of football -- he travelled coach towards the mix despite his go back to National football league success.

"Everything you are doing, you are doing the work for that second time," he stated about going from Year 1 to Year 2. "You are doing the work again. You've already experienced it once. You've experienced the rate of the overall game, the potholes, things that may come up. You are doing the work again. You have some muscle memory there. Also it only is for benefit of it, should you attack it. Which has been my experience. I've no empirical data to express at this time around. That's my own experience."

You might expect believe it or not intensity in the only guy to win the Comeback Player of the season and Coach of the season honours within the same amazing career.
